Delorean 20b Rotary Engine Conversion Jim Strickland from Florida needed a new engine for his Delorean, instead of just replacing the standard PRV engine he decided to give his car a new lease of life. After considering several different engines he went with Mazda's twin turbo 20b rotory engine, producing 297 FT-LBS and 300 BHP .

Jim upgraded the Delorean's standard Renault gearbox to a Porsche G50 6 speed gearbox with LSD as sold in the 993 991. He used Kennedy Engineering in California to build a specialised engine/transmission adaptor.

The new engine and gearbox was 11 inches longer than the standard Delorean setup so modifications were required. The frame had to be modified to accommodate the new shift linkage, transmission mounts, engine mounts and twin turbo clearance. The engine cradle cross member was moved further to the rear to make space for the rotary's oil pan.

Once completed the Rotary Delorean had over double the standard BHP and was able to achieve a 0-60 MPH time of 4.5 seconds. The total cost in parts for the conversion was $16,000 not including labour.
